4 p.m.4 p.m. update. CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said at this time, it does not appear speed or alcohol played a factor in the accident.
As of Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s investigators were not releasing the names of the owners of the horses, sheriff’s Capt. John Robertson said.
Robertson said one person in the Carneros district owned three of the horses and the other one belonged to a friend who was boarding the animal at his property.
“The horses were in an enclosed area, but we are not sure how they got out. They were boarded about half mile from the crash site,” Robertson said.
10:15 a.m. update. A Santa Rosa man was killed early this morning when his car struck five horses that had wandered onto Highway 121 just east of Old Sonoma Road in Napa County.
Mark Steven Trupiano, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three of the horses were dead when the CHP arrived on scene. The other two had to be put down.
The crash took place around 5 a.m. Trupiano was eastbound in a Mitsubishi Galant -- heading into Napa -- when he hit the horses, the CHP said.
As of this morning, the CHP was still trying to find the owner of the horses. It was not clear how they got onto the road.
Further details about the accident are not available. It is unknown if speed or alcohol played a factor in the fatal crash.
The impact with the horses cause the hood of the Mitsubishi to be ripped off. Fire crews had to pry apart crushed portions of the car to remove Trupiano from the car.
Caltrans brought in a front loader to and a crane to remove the dead horses from the crash scene.
Highway 121 was closed until 7:30 a.m. Traffic was rerouted to Old Sonoma Highway during the two-plus hours while 121 was cleared..
This is the first fatal traffic crash in Napa County this year.
Correction: An earlier version of this article (7:45 a.m.) listed the driver as being from Sonoma.
[Declined to post the picture ... too upsetting]
